William “Willie” Leonard Cowden (1961 – 2025)
Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and Friend

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Leonard Cowden, aged 63, of Edmonton, Alberta, on March 11, 2025.

William was born on March 26, 1961, in Vancouver, British Columbia, predeceased by his parents Keith Cowden, Juanita (Mann) Cowden, by his sister Beverly, and his brother Keith Jr. "Butch" (Debbie).

A proud and dedicated serviceman, William served in the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) from 1982 to 1990. Although he aspired to join the French Foreign Legion, an injury prevented him from pursuing that path. His work ethic was unparalleled, and after leaving the military, he spent 25 years as a scaffolder, holding roles such as journeyman, foreman, and general foreman. He earned the respect and admiration of his coworkers throughout his career.

In his younger years, Willie was a passionate hockey player. Though he did not pursue the sport professionally, his love for hockey remained a constant throughout his life. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Bruins and especially admired Bobby Orr. Willie was known for his vibrant personality and infectious sense of humor, often being the life of the party wherever he went.

Willie is survived by his wife, Leonie "Shrub" Gratton, whom he met in 1993, and their four children: Kalam, Dalton (Eloura), Aija, and Kaitlynn, as well as his two grandchildren, Felicity and Ezra. He is also survived by his siblings: Wendy (Bill), Tammie (Kevin), and Jimmy (Joey), along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Willie will be lovingly remembered by his brothers in 2PPCLI, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Willie's life will be held at Trinity Funeral Home (10530 116 Street, Edmonton) on March 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
