Uta (Krug) Kastendieck
Uta Kastendieck (née Krug) was born on August 14, 1937 in Merseburg Germany to parents Hans Bernhard Emil Krug and Lieselotte Krug (née Wiegand). She was the second of 6 children born to her parents, and the only daughter.
Uta lived a full life, and despite many hardships, she lived a life of faith and courage. After the Second World War, Uta crossed from East to West Germany with her mother, grandmother and 4 of her brothers. A few years later, as a young woman, Uta came to live and work in Canada, and it was here she met and married her husband Eberhard Gerhard Kastendieck (1935 - 2022). They were married for 65 years. They are the parents of five children: Heide (Daryl) Neis, Werner (Colleen) Kastendieck, Karen (Buck) Hills, Kenneth (Jennifer) Kastendieck and Gerald (Karen) Kastendieck. As well as her children, Uta’s family includes 27 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren who will miss her dearly.
Uta worked hard and served those around her. She dedicated many hours and years of her life to service. She loved to garden and successfully grew many beautiful plants, both in her home and in her garden. She loved word games and loved learning. She remained fluent in her native German, and became an expert in English grammar as well. She baked many traditional German treats that were well loved by her children and grandchildren. She spent many hours researching family history and finding both her and her husband’s ancestors. She always had many interesting stories to share about her childhood, her family, and her ancestors.
The legacy she leaves us is one of faith, hard work and endurance. Those of us who were fortunate to know and love her are grateful for her example and we strive to emulate the many great qualities that she cultivated in her life.
We love you. Until we meet again.
I came to know Uta through church, and developed a friendship with her that I cherished. I do not know all of her family but she was so proud of all of you. She was always kind, thoughtful and we shared many interests, and she amazed me with her knowledge of the gospel and life in general. A couple of old ladies we enjoyed spending time together! My sincere condolences to her large loving family. Especially Werner and Colleen. Love Andrea.
In our journey of life there are folks who by their example and kind character bless us with their example and love. The Kastendieck family has done that for me. Every interaction has been fun, kind and sincere. Sister Kastendieck always treated me well and I have enjoyed great experiences with their children. In my mind Uta is one of the great Matriarch’s of my generation as a teacher, exemplar, leader and friend. Our sincere condolences and love for a wonderful posterity with so many children. Good Bless everyone 💕
How I love Uta. She was a stalwart, intelligent woman who could speak on just about any topic. She had a great sense of humour accompanied by a beautiful smile. We were able to watch Canada Day fireworks together along with Andrea and when I saw fireworks on my recent trip I thought, ” That’s Uta letting me know that she is safe and happy.” She is one of my purple sisters!
