Terence Philip Cheesman
Terence died in Edmonton after a recent diagnosis and short stay in hospital. He was born in Edmonton and was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Madeleine, as well as his sisters, Heather and Elaine. He graduated in Arts at the University of Alberta then worked over 30 years as a letter carrier for Canada Post.
But his main passions were military history (particularly tank warfare) and numismatics, becoming a renowned authority, collector and lecturer in the area of ancient Greek and Roman coins. He was a long-time member of the Edmonton Numismatic Society, active in club governance, meetings and shows. In addition, he had a wide circle of friends and dealer contacts in the ancient numismatic community, from Canada to the US and Europe. He especially enjoyed supporting numismatic educational programs and inspiring young scholars. His support of these endeavors will continue.
A memorial gathering will be arranged at a later date.
His collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins will appear in Classical Numismatic Group’s Feature Auction 126 in May, 2024, as the “Wild Rose Collection.”
Through the travail of the ages,
Midst the pomp and toil of war,
I have fought and strove and perished
Countless times upon this star.
In the form of many people
In all panoplies of time
Have I seen the luring vision
Of the Victory Maid, sublime.
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.
George S. Patton
Terry was an amazing man and I will miss him deeply. RIP good man.
I was so very sad and shocked to hear of Terry passing. I spoke to him often as I was best friends with his deceased sister Heather. Terry and I maintained a friendship after her passing. I last spoke to Terry on December 30th. I will greatly miss our conversations and the interesting things he taught me. Rest in peace my friend.
