Mary Evelyn Locke
Mary Evelyn Locke (nee MacGowan) January 16, 1937 to October 22, 2020.
We’re sad to announce that Mary left us on October 22, 2020 at 83 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband Archie (April 2016) and is survived by her children: Greg, Jeff (Caroline), Carmen and Jennifer (Andrew) and her sister Patricia.
Mary was a school teacher, librarian, tireless volunteer, talented artist, but most especially an amazing mother. Volunteer activities included parent liaison for McNally High School (even after her children graduated), a coordinator at the City of Edmonton’s Garbage Fairs and Reuse Round Ups, and an observer with the Ottwell Community Patrol.
She was ‘crafty’ and enjoyed knitting, sewing, stained glass, copper smithing, tatting, cross stitch, rug hooking, wreath design, and painting. An avid reader and lover of mysteries, she also enjoyed live theatre and music and often had season subscriptions to the Arden and ESO. Prior to health issues she would travel regularly to visit her sister in California and walk the beaches of Oceanside collecting shells and ‘special’ rocks.
Mary had a tremendous zest for life and was the light in every room. Her keen sense of humor (and telling of inappropriate jokes) will be dearly missed, as will the laughter she infected everyone with.
We’d like to say a special thank you to the wonderful staff and friends at the Extendicare Holyrood who cared for her for the better part of 5 years. Their kindness, understanding and support are very much appreciated.
COVID precautions prevent the holding of a meaningful in-person life celebration event. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, and treating yourself to a chocolate bar and/or an Iced Cap from Tim’s.
