Maria Ceu Proenca
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, Maria Ceu Proenca, on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Her earthly journey is complete.
Today, we celebrate her, the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.
Maria was born on October 5, 1939 in Casegas, Portugal. She is predeceased by her loving husband Antonio Proenca, her parents Antonio Do Pedro and Virginia Da Costa as well as her two older brothers Antonio and Jose Da Costa.
She leaves behind her only daughter Betty (Alex), her two loving grandchildren Julian and Alexis Augello as well as numerous extended family and friends.
Maria married her husband Antonio in Portugal in 1963. They then emigrated to Canada the following year. She spent the next 58 years living in Edmonton and working several occupations such as seamstress, housekeeping supervisor and finally a nanny prior to her retirement.
Maria was a true survivor. Over the last 25 years, she battled breast cancer and won. She was a loving, caring wife as well as a caregiver to her husband prior to his passing in 2015. Maria always enjoyed spending time with her daughter, son-in-law and grandkids. So many days over the years were spent helping others and cheering on her grandkids during their activities. Her favorite pasttimes included cooking, gardening, visiting with friends and watching Oilers games with her family.
Her legacy has left so many wonderful memories for so many people. She will truly be missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, in Maria's name.
