And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” – Ecclesiastes 12:7

Laverne Jean Johannes
June 4, 1940, to March 28, 2022

With tears of sorrow, we will miss Laverne Jean Johannes, yet we are comforted that she is no longer in pain as the Lord has called His faithful servant home and her spirit lives on.

Laverne will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband and best friend, Gerald Johannes. She is survived by her three daughters Joanne, Patti, and Lisa, her son-in-law, Eric, as well as her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Yvonne, Gloria, Shirley, Marlese, Laura, Wendy, her twin sister Loretta, and her brother Floyd.

Mom had a great hearty laugh, I will always remember how much her laughter cheered me and how much she loved life, nature, and traveling. She was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress; gifts she inherently passed on to Patty. Every holiday she put on an excellent feast, and she always found some way to make leftovers interesting. I still remember how wonderful the house smelled when she baked fresh bread. She used her creative talents and crafted Christmas and Valentine’s Day cards and trinkets, expressing her love to family and friends through her thoughtful gifts. She usually picked up her knitting needles at the end of the evening, no matter how tired she was, always thinking of others while making baby blankets and knitted hats and scarves for family, friends, and neighbors. Mum loved to garden and passed on her love of nature to her daughters, who soon learned the art of weeding and watering. She was full of life when she wanted to explore a bit of nature, and very much enjoyed camping, so long as she could do it in style with all the comforts she brought from home, including the kitchen sink. During the summer we often picked Saskatoon berries together so she could make her wonderful pies and jams, and of course, she always made Dad’s favorite, butter tarts. She always enjoyed serving people through acts of kindness and the generosity of her creative talents.

She was faithful to her family, a firm believer in Christ Jesus, and so we were always expected to attend church regularly when we were young, providing spiritual structure and mighty prayers, and still today her prayers have kept us on ‘the straight and narrow’. She showed strength of spirit, with the occasional streak of stubbornness, which helped her overcome adversities. She was fearless when it came to sharing her spirituality, believing God could save any soul, and so she witnessed to everyone, at anytime, everywhere she went. I admire her tenacity and still feel her encouragement today.
