John Paul Murray Walters
John Paul Murray Walters 1945 - 2024
John Paul Murray Walters passed away peacefully at home in Edmonton on June 17, 2024 after a short battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.
Born in Ottawa on September 26, 1945, John moved to Edmonton in 1967 where he attended the University of Alberta, gaining a Degree in Education and pursuing a teaching career. He began his career at the Glenrose School Hospital, teaching Physical Education to students with special needs, then a short stint at W.P. Wagner High School and then onto teaching PE and Math at Queen Elizabeth High School until he retired. His kind and genuine concern for his students made him truly appreciated by all who knew him as a teacher.
John had many tremendous accomplishments in teaching but one of his fondest memories was of a Teaching Exchange program where he and his family lived and studied in England! It was there that he developed his love of travel where he and his family travelled extensively throughout Europe and North America. A passion he carried on into his later years.
John was also a total sports enthusiast. If there was a game he played it, he taught it, he watched it, and he loved it! His outgoing personality and infectious enthusiasm for sports made him second to none.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, Bonnie and his children Jason (Gladys) and Scott (Sara) and grandchildren Samuel and Daisy. He is also survived by his sister Judy (Ed) and his nieces and nephews Cathy, Tara, Kevin, and the Brownell Family.
The family wishes to thank the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Alberta for both their diagnoses and health care initiatives.
A private cremation has already taken place. As we mourn the loss of John, let us remember the joy and warm-heartedness he brought to the lives of those who knew him. Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten.

Dear Bonnie and Family: So sorry to read that John has died. It was a privilege and a pleasure to have taught with him at the Glenrose. His enthusiasm, love of the kids, and professionalism was exemplary. John was a positive influence and he was (as are you) one of the good ones. All the best– Jack Hassan

So sad to see John’s passing. We shared many laughs with John and Bonnie. We got married on the same day back in 1970. I loved John’s sense of humor, and a big laugh. Always enjoyed their company when we ran into them. Our condolences to Bonnie and family.
Bonnie and family – so ver sorry to read of John’s passing. He taught me so very much. It was an honour to take him as my guest in the press box for tan Edmonton Oilers game because, without his leadership and encouragement, I would have never covered the National Hockey League.
God bless,
