I am so very sorry to hear of your loss.
I took an introductory African history course with Guy Thompson and he was the reason I chose MEAS as my focus for my undergrad and part of the reason I stuck with history as a major. He was so enthusiastic and informative, bursting misconceptions about Africa and emphasizing the complexity of the history of the continent and the agency of the people there.
I am teaching my very first course this year and if I am able to inspire my students half as much as he inspired me, I’ll count myself lucky. He is a model of a teacher to me.
I am so grateful I had the opportunity to learn from him.
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of a dear friend and colleague, Guy Thompson. Guy was my senior at the University of Minnesota and guided me through my early years as a graduate student. As a South African graduate student, I was deeply impressed by Guy’s profound understanding of the history of the African continent. I was also deeply moved by his generosity and care. Go well, my dear friend.
To his daughter Rosie, and family, please accept my very sincere condolences.
I was a UTS classmate of Guy from grade 9 until we graduated from high school. I remember him vividly and fondly, and extend sympathy to his family in their great loss.
