Elizabeth “Betty” Mary Larner

July 13, 2023 10 Condolences Print Obituary Send Flowers

It is with great sadness the family of Elizabeth (Betty) Larner announce her passing.

Betty was born in Placentia, NL and passed away at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton, AB on July 9, 2023, after a brief illness.

Betty is predeceased by her husband, Kevin Larner, of Whitbourne, NL. Her parents Violet and Bartholomew Lannon and her brother Lawrence of East Placentia. As well, very special cousins Mary Stoyles, Peggy Gagnon and Regina Lannon

She was a very reserved, quiet, elegant lady, of strong Catholic Conviction. Growing up as an only child was not lonely as she had many cousins who filled that void. Betty would often say she grew up when life was hard for many but all she knew was the love of her parents saying "we didn't have a lot but we were comfortable and happy."

As the years went by, she worked as a Laboratory/X-ray technician at the Placentia Hospital, and after several years she went looking for a new career and found it at the Argentia Navy Base in NL. The impact this positive move made on her lasted a lifetime. She truly loved her work there. But the base closed, her parents passed and off she went on another adventure, this one taking her to Brampton, encouraged by her cousin Mary. She found work with Motorola and stayed there until she retired.

Betty never married, until one day an old boyfriend, our father Kevin Larner, came calling. He proposed on Valentine's day, 1998 and they were married in August of 1998. They lived in Whitbourne, NL until our father passed and she then returned to Brampton. In 2017, her closest friend and cousin passed away suddenly and she decided to move to Alberta to be closer to Kevin's family there.

In Alberta she lived independently at a Senior's residence in St. Albert. We will remember her love for her family, her love of desserts, her dislike of vegetables, unless it was a good Jiggs dinner, and spending time with Family.

As her epitaph states, "Modest & Gentle, Loved by Many."

She leaves to mourn her step-children: Catherine Barrett (Rudy), Arthur Larner (Louise), Andrew Larner (Marilyn), Mary Larner-Pardy (Craig), William Larner (Carmela) along with 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren as well as special cousins: Thomasina Betton, Patricia Gagnon-McGee and Stephen Gagnon.

Funeral Mass will be held in Edmonton, AB with Burial in Placentia, NL. She is finally returning home!

A memorial service will be held in Placentia prior to Burial, details to follow.

    • Thank you Sylvia and Robert.

  2. Sincere sympathies to Betty’s family in Alberta and Newfoundland. I was heartbroken to hear of Betty’s passing. Betty and I have been friends since 1960 when we were room mates in Argentina. We had many good times and good laughs. She visited me often here in Florida and we enjoyed every minute. I will miss chatting with her and rehashing all our shenanigans in the form. RIP my dear friend, until we meet again.

    • Thank you Pat. She spoke of you and your shenanigans often. You were a dear friend

  3. Betty was a cousin on my Mom’s side of our family. There are many fond memories from growing up in South East and Placentia. My sincere condolences on your loss.

    • Thank you Teri. Betty loved East Placentia and really anything Placentia.

  4. Rather late, but sitting here thinking of Betty and just wanted to send our condolences. We met her through our good friend Mary when she moved to Brampton, and enjoyed many visits with her over the years. She and Kevin were a lovely couple and welcomed us when we stopped by in Whitbourne one summer (I’m originally from NL as well). She was a sweet lady! We were thankful that she was able to end her days with her family out west after Mary passed. We miss them both!

    • Thank you Gloria & Gary for you kind words. Mary was certianly a big part of Betty’s Life and I am not sure she ever got over that Loss.

  5. Betty was my first cousin.I miss her so much and our telephone conversations. She was so sweet May she rest in peace.

  6. Thank you Evelyn.
