Inin (Higino) Carreon
05 November 1965 - 27 November 2020
It is with deep heartfelt sadness to announce the passing of Inin.
A wonderfully kind, free spirited, caring, incredibly complex, private, intelligent, creative and funny man.
Inin was truly one of a kind. Anyone who had the opportunity to know him, play sports with him, go to school with him, work with him, you were definitely in great company and shared good conversation.
Inin was born in Cebu Philippines to Vicenta Robertson (nee Igot) and late Higino Carreon Sr. He is survived by his partner Kerri Gafka, mother Vicenta, brothers Edwin and Terry, their wives, nieces and nephews. Loved immensely by his extended family Colin, Travis, Michelle, Emily and Haley, as well as a few chosen close friends and numerous colleagues.
Inin moved from the Philippines at a young age and grew up in California. After high school he spent time serving in the US Navy. He spoke fondly of his military comrades and told stories of being at sea on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vincent. After leaving the military…if you knew Inin you knew he was not fond of being told what to do - so he moved to Alberta. His true passion for anything sports related led him to obtaining his Bachelors degree in Phys-Ed at Red Deer college. Any future career in this field was cut short when he suffered two extensive knee injuries. He always said he applied to nursing on a whim and was surprised but happy when accepted to the University of Alberta where he obtained his second degree, a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. His exemplary work ethic, dedication and commitment, attention to detail and pride of professionalism were something to be admired and leaned from.
Inin loved to travel and had the opportunity to see many places around the world. Haida Gwai, Central America, South East Asia and Australia were some of the most notable places he spent time in.
For anyone who really knew Inin, you would definitely know he was a man of innumerable gadgets. Researched, knowledgable and better than any google review anyone could ever need. Ohhh the gadgets, flashlights, pens, knives, shoes, watches and tools.
Inin enjoyed spending time building things, watching movies, drinking beer, outdoor activities, sports, helping others, great food, four letter words, tattoos and animals.
In true honour and acknowledgement of Inin’s free spirit his cremated remains will be spread around the world by family and friends. To remember him individually and honour his amazing sense of humour, raise a glass, turn on a flashlight and share a memory. Forever loved, greatly missed and never forgotten.
Due to Covid, the hope will be to have a outdoor celebration in his honour for family and friends in the spiring. For further information please contact a family member or one of his select close friends. Rest in peace Inin xo.
Rest well my good friend. You’ll never be forgotten. You’ll always be beside me when I ride. Every gravel road and every smooth highway. R.I.P.
Inin spent last few years of high school at masset BC, George M Dawson secondary. He came in a new kid but left with many Haida brothers after graduation, he played many sports as an all around athlete, he had endeared himself to all he met,his smile his amazing attitude and the time we spent with him was epic! Hi Andy! Craig Decker here. I just learned of Inin’s passing today. Sad to here about him being gone. I have many fond memories of him ( and u) while living in Masset. Funny we chose the same profession, as I have been a PE teacher for over 30 years. He will be missed. Cheers to all his family and friends!
My deepest condolences! Loved working with Inin-such a super nurse And loved the man. So kind- would give the shirt off his back if it would help.
He will be missed and I will miss him lots!
Inin was truly one of a kind.
He was appreciated by endless peers for never knowing what he may come up with next time you saw him. He was truly an adventurer and loved telling stories of his latest escapades.
His handiwork was meticulous and he humbly but proudly shared photos of these to many friends.
He will greatly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him💞
I worked with Inin on neuro ICU . He was like an onion. Once you got past his tough outer layers he was really nice person inside . A really good nurse and colleague. I was really shocked to hear this sad news . Condolences. He was a good man .
For the family of Inin I’m can’t express my sadness at his passing and the pain you have to now endure. Be reassured he was loved and respected and admired by so many of his colleagues I can’t imagine going back to work with out him. Some of my best shifts were working side by side with my tattoo, motorcycle loving comrade. He has taught me so much in nursing help me with my tattoo after care every time, and given me advice on which tools or gadgets to use on a home project. My soul and spirit is broken I will never forget him and all the laughs we share.
Kerri Inin always said he would love to travel to Guyana SA my home land one time if possible I’d love to take some of his ashes with me on my next trip home if possible
Thanks Love and Light alway 🥲
Inin I hope with all my heart that you can rest easy now. Night shift will never be the same without you. You are one of the most hardworking people I know and I’ve enjoyed every single shifts I worked with you. You are always full of stories, very helpful and caring. I’m so grateful to have met you and worked with you all these years. I’m gonna miss seeing this Hawaiian looking, toque wearing fire cracker that is Inin. 🙂
I am deeply saddened for Inin’s passing. I would like to express my condolences to Inin’s family and friends. He is a friend, colleague and an older brother that will be truly missed. He treated 4A4 his home; from fixing the shoe racks and coat hanger, spraying WD- 40 to the doors, and reorganizing the sanitizer dispenser. He is a good nurse. A compassionate and caring nurse, to his patients and patient’s families. Now my kababayan, though your lights might have dimmed forever, but in our hearts, your lights will forever be one of the brightest! From now on, your mood lighting in 4a4 will be called the “Inin effect”.
My deepest condolences to family and friends.
Working with Inin was a pleasure. He always was ready to share a story or tip to help on a project or just talk about our cats.
Seeing this tattoo’d man show such genuine kindness and care to his patients always stood out, he knew how to connect with people and make them feel better. I loved coming on after his assignments and seeing what he had fixed or tinkered with to improve its function and make it easier for colleagues and patients.
You will be missed and not forgotten!
So saddened to hear of Inin’s passing. I knew him briefly as a young man when he spent time on Haida Gwaii. I have never forgotten his sense of adventure, mischievous nature and quick smile. Condolences to his family and friends.

I am deeply saddened of the passing of Inin! My sincere condolences to his family! Inin was a very well respected and loved nurse, who was very compassionate towards his patients and their families! I always knew if I didn’t know something or needed help, Inin was sure to be there! I know you will be watching down at me at my next golf game, laughing when I make a horrible swing! Rest In Peace Inin!
Inin in behalf of the Filipino nurses of 4G3 thank you for all your help whenever we needed help in inserting new IV site and making jokes on me for being so short. Thanks for the good memories..you will not be forgotten. May our almighty God light your path on your way to Him. May your soul rest in peace.
There are no words to express the loss that is felt the world over.
Inin was a kind, good, complex man that was always ready for a laugh and a new adventure, with a coffee or gadget in hand. This is how I will remember him.
He was remarkable, and will never truly know what an impact he had on his friends, colleagues and loved ones.
May you find love and peace now Inin.
“The song is ended but the melody lingers on.”
I am so saddened by this news. I enjoyed my talks with inin and getting to know him. A really kind, unique and talented man. My parents lived next to him and he was always willing to help out and was the best kind of neighbor you could have. A very interesting man with lots of hobbies and interests and was always tinckering in the garage. I am sending love to his family. I will miss seeing his smiling face. Rest in peace.

Very saddened to hear of Inin’s passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kerri, Travis Michelle and the girls!!! Thinking of you all and everyone who is mourning.
RIP InIn, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the times spent getting to know you over the last 14 years. Thank you for your service in the USN, and your professionalism as a nurse. From what I’ve read from your co workers, you were second to none.
I will raise a glass you,
My thoughts go out to your family.
My deepest condolences to Inin’s loved ones. I always remember him from high school and admired his athletic abilities, especially running up walls in the gym. He was always kind to everyone and loved to joke and laugh. Rest in peace Inin.
My heart is broken with this very sad news. 💔 I’m so sorry for your loss.
I’ve made prayers for you all; Inin’s family, friends, everyone who loved him. I’m spiritual not religious, and I’ve always prayed (since I was 3 years old, when my Naanii-grandmother taught me).
I’ve been singing the Spirit (not a song) for all of us. This is a hard loss. I’ll do this again.
When I was in high school with Inin, I was in the Miss Masset Pageant. My escort showed up drunk. I was devastated and walked up the stairs crying. Inin saw me and he ran home and changed into his suit and offered his arm to me. I smiled so big. What a sweetheart. I’m so glad I knew him for a little while.
Haw’aa, thank you. Love and light to all.
I’ve only known Inin from work but his character shows so much at work. He’s shown me how to truly care for anyone and what compassion and care is. He’s been an excellent role model to follow at work. Thank you my friend for all that you have done for your community and the lives you saved. We will miss you. May God be with you!
Well written obituary. I’m sure Inin would have approved. I only knew Inin from seeing him around the hospitals or at the occasional friend gathering, but he was one of those people you would always stop and have a small chat with. I will miss his easy smile and swagger.
Condolences to Inin’s family and friends. I will miss talking to Inin mid-night shift about travelling and our bucket lists! He’s taught us all a lot about patient care and how the little details can make a world of difference. Such an interesting and complex man. I hope that his spirit rests easy. He will be missed.
I was so sad to hear about Inin. I will miss his colourful shirts and headgear, his no-nonsense, “get ‘er done” attitude, his overall helpfulness and conversation. He would always say “HI Tanner” when he saw me at work (a nickname he created). Night shifts will be more lonely without him. To his family and close friends–know that he will be remembered and truly missed. I hope he has found abundant peace and joy as his journey continues on high. At this difficult time, may you be filled with good memories and surrounded by love.
Oh my
Inin you were truly a friend and brother. You will be missed. My condolences to the family
