Cassie Onyschuk
Oct 13, 1933 - July 18, 2020
It’s with great sadness that Cassie Onyschuk, passed away at her home on July 18, 2020, peacefully with her family by her side. She is survived by her children Joyce (Wayne) Post, Deb (Wayne) Ginter, Jim (Wendy) Hupka, 14 Grandchildren and their spouses and 21 Great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Cassie was predeceased by her husband Bill, son Lawrence, grand daughter Tanis, daughter in law Laurie and dear friend Jerry Hawkins.
She was also predeceased by her parents Steve and Mary Hupka, Charles and Anne Onyschuk. Brothers, George, Steve, Nick and Alex. Sisters, Doris, Kay, Helen, Anne, Elsie, Rosie and Olga.
Cassie was the 10th child of 12 and the last of that generation.
Cassie grew up in Barich, Alberta (north of Smoky Lake) Growing up on the farm was hard work. Tending to the animals such as milking 8 cows before going to school was a normal way of life.
Mom attended the White Mud Creek School where she completed her 8th grade. A one room schoolhouse which still stands today.
At a young age, Mom learned to continue all the Ukrainian traditional Religious beliefs, as well as preparing the food.
A bit of a tomboy, she would become her father’s shadow. She would talk about working on the farm with him and how much he taught her about farming. As she grew up, she would then work for other farmers.
She loved riding horses (bareback no less)
Cassie and Bill Onyschuk were married on Nov 26, 1952 and they lived in Redwater for about a year. They moved to Edmonton and lived in the Westmount area. They bought a 2 room house in the Jasper Place area and lived there for about 4 years. They then moved to the Beverly Area, then to the Athlone neighbourhood and finally to the Delton and Balwiin neighbourhoods.
Always a hard working lady, who did not know the meaning that it can’t be done.
Cassie endured so many health issues over the years, beating breast cancer not once, but twice. She never felt sorry for herself and wondered why me?
Mom loved Bingo Night, dancing, playing cards (especially with Rick), camping trips, cooking & baking her famous poppyseed cakes for her grandchildren as they grew up. Everyone loved Baba’s surprise poppyseed money cakes. All the grandchildren loved to receive a quarter wrapped up in foil inside their slice of cake.
Wayne and I are so grateful that we had such a wonderful time with mom over the last year. Always a story to tell us or just laughter throughout the day. A phone call from Jim or her grandkids would make her day. Always asking when they would be coming over for a visit. Aunty Vicky and Jerry would visit regularly, Doreen, Sharon and Donna would call or stop by whenever they were in Edmonton. Mary Berner called weekly. Angie Hupka called regularly before moving to Medicine Hat, Alberta.
There are so many Special Angels who took such good care of Mom. Dr.Richard Chan and his staff, Loida, Joanne & Elsie. Dr. Nancy Zhu and her staff, Palliative Care Nurses who were always a phone call away. Home Care Nurse Robin, Dynalife staff, U of A Outpatient Nurses for all of Mom’s transfusions and last but not least, our daughter Corry who was continuously here to help with her Baba.
To all of you, Thank you for your phone calls & visits as well as your well wishes. Mom was so blessed to have all of you in her life.
Mom has been cremated and she will be laid to rest at St.Peter & St.Paul Church at Eastgate (near Redwater, Alberta) on Saturday August 8, 2020 at 1 pm.The service will be officiated by Father Alexi.
Due to the Covid Virus, the burial will be by invitation only. We will have a Celebration of Life for Mom at a later date, where we can all join in Celebrating Cassie Onyschuk.
In Lieu of flowers we ask that you donate blood in memory of Cassie Onyschuk. Give the gift of life.
We were very sad to hear of Auntie Cassie’s passing. She was an amazing woman, full of love, spunk, energy and humor. I’ll never forget when she came to pick apples off our tree, she wanted to climb up the ladder to get them herself and when I said I’d climb the ladder she said she wasn’t going to just sit there and let me do all the work, so she picked up the rake and started knocking them off the tree.
She’ll always live on in our hearts!!

One Great memory you can cherish of my mom.
So sorry Joyce I remember your mom very well she was part of my life a long time ago. Sending you lots of love ❤️
We, Jenn and I are saddened that baba has passed away. Before covid19 hit our friend and sister in Christ Diana from church drove us to visit baba and mom and dad at their place. I came one other time alone to spend more time with baba. I shared the gospel with baba and asked her if she would like to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. She said yes. I led her in a prayer and she repeated it after me.
John 3:15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
Romans 10:13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Baba is in glory now with Christ!
That was so nice of you to do Wayne. Thanks for bringing the gospel to my mom and your Baba.
Thanks for your condolences Lee.

RIP Auntie Cassie
Very sorry to hear of Cassie’s passing. My first fun memory of Cassie was when Debby and I would go to barn dances. We were really young and should have been out in clubs for people our age, instead we chose to hang out with her and her husband doing waltzes, 2 steps and chicken dance. Lots of laughs. 💕 I’m sure you both are reunited, dancing up a storm together.
I’m also so glad I got to learn to make perogies with you during Halloween. So many laughs getting dressed up in different costumes and maybe having a few too many wines while learning this tradition. You were such fun to be around.
You will be missed. Love you 💕😘
Oh we had such good times with my mom. She absolutely so enjoyed showing you and Dona how to make perogies. The barn dances were so much fun with my mom and dad. Mom and dad are dancing with the angels together again.
Memories eternal is our Ukrainian traditional saying. Thank you so very much for your condolences and great memory.
May the love of family and friends comfort all of you during these difficult days, my most heartfelt condolences. I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of Cassie. Please accept my condolences and may prayers help comfort all and hasten the journey of her soul to Heaven. I will be praying until the time of suffering and sadness is over. May God give you all the strength to overcome this loss.
Thanks my dear friend .Your words are straight from the heart and soul. Huge hugs to you.
Dear Debby,
Leona and I were sad to hear of Auntie Cassie’s passing. She was a kind and special lady. You could always count on her to be there, even though she might be a “little late”. She was the best Batak ever and we have life long memories of her to share. Vichnaya Pamyat!
From Wayne and Debby
Thanks for your kind words. Mom’s best times were when she was visited by or went to see her grandkids and great grand kids. She loved being around people and she would always say “the more the merrier.” Even being a “little late” for events she would say “ah, better late than never.” I am so overwhelmed with joy in my heart that I wasn’t late for mom at her last moments. She waited for me to come be by her side and then gently fell asleep just minutes after I left.
Vichnaya Pamyat …Memeories Eternal.
There were so many memories we have of my mom. We had the pleasure of having her be our neighbors for 7 years. She was so happy living next door to us. She so enjoyed times with Wayne and I, and our kids and her great grandkids. We had the now unforgettable last Christmas day with her at our place. It was a very nice time and we now have the pictures of that day to cherish.
Mom is now dancing with dad and the angels. Mom is with all that were waiting for her and she is at peace. Memories Eternal. Vichnaya Pamyat
Auntie Cassie (Axenia) was my my moms sister. She was the tenth of twelve with my mom Domka (Doris) the oldest/first of twelve children born to my grand parents Stephan and Maria Hupka from the Barich area near Smoky Lake. She was my favourite auntie and not only because of her poppy seed cake or turkey gravy. She always made you feel welcome. She was very kind to my mom and my mom always spoke highly of her. Auntie Cassie was blessed with seemingly endless energy which was evident in her work ethic and on the dance floor. Things did not come easy to her but that never stopped her from being compassionate and helping others. Nor did it take away her sense of humour. I still share jokes I heard from her years ago. It is very comforting to know that she received the gospel of Jesus. I will always cherish my memories of Auntie Cassie….nephew Nick Demchuk
