Lois Louise Payne
January 3, 1926 – January 27, 2020
Lois Louise Payne, 94, of Edmonton, Alberta, wife of the late Frank Payne, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2020.
Born January 3, 1926, in Nanton, Alberta, she was the 6th of 8 children of Carl and Florence Steen (Garbutt), but lived most of her adult life in Edmonton.
Lois was predeceased by her loving husband Frank, mother and father, brother Ralph, sisters Edna, Beulah, Margaret, Dorothy and Lorraine and step-daughter Terry.
She is survived by her son Gordon (Linda), granddaughter Amanda (Jason), grandson Daniel and great-granddaughter Maggie. She is also survived by her sister Elaine and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
We are especially grateful to those of you (dear friends) who travelled with her on her many hospital and Dr appointments.
Lois lived her life with love, trust, compassion, intuition, enthusiastic and was always competitive.
When she married Frank, he asked her to learn 2 things: Bridge and Golf, which she hated for the first couple of years. However, love for him made it possible to try harder. Along with Frank and alone the last 24 years, she nurtured many true friendships thru both activities.
Given Lois’s passion for golf, her celebration of life will be held at Glendale G&CC, 12410 – 199 St NW, Edmonton, AB on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Glendale G&CC Junior Golf Program at 12410-199th Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5V 1T8 or (780) 447-3529 ext. 221.
Dear Gordon and Linda
We are truly sorry for your loss. Lois was a great lady, a golfing friend for many years and will be greatly missed at our ladies events at the Glendale.
She will always be with us in spirit and our memory.
Lois had the unique quality of making a person feel very special – like you were one of her best friends! She was an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure of playing golf with her. As knowledgeable and competitive as Lois was on the course, she was a warm and compassionate friend to all the Glendale members! We will miss this wonderful lady and extend our deepest sympathy to her family.
I am so blessed to have known Lois. She was a dear friend that I first met at the Totem Pole Golf Tournament in Jasper. We have been great golf pals ever since. I was at Glendale member guest with her and I had her at our family cottage in Manitoba. The last few years we got caught up with long phone calls. The last one I enjoyed with her was at New Years. I admired her so much and was glad to hear that Edmonton ladies golf recognized her last year. I will miss our phone calls. Marg Patrick
God blesses us with many special people in our life and Lois was one of them. Lois has been our first lady of golf at the Glendale and will be truly missed.
Dear Gordon, Linda and family
I am so sorry to hear of Auntie Lois’s passing. She was quite an amazing lady. I have never met a more positive person, her attitude to adversity in her life was to meet it head on and overcome it with sheer will power and positive thought. We can all take a lesson from her. She was always helping others and never had a bad word to say of anyone. Bless her heart.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you,
Dear Gordon, Linda and family
I’m very sorry to hear of Great Aunt Lois’ passing. It’s many decades since I’ve seen her but I remember her well from my childhood and teens. I was awed by my Dad’s vivacious, always beautifully dressed aunt! She struck me as the kind of confident and outgoing career woman I wanted to become. She was funny, always laughing and made a fuss over me, which I loved. It was always exciting to have Aunt Lois come to visit.
I feel truly blessed to have known Lois, a friend for many years. I learned so much from her and am grateful for our conversations. She bought so much love to many people and this is something I will never forget. She has made our world beautiful thanks to her presence.

Our Lois, one of the best friends anyone could have. She always had a smile, a nice word and encouragement for anyone who was near her. She never forgot who her friends were, keeping in contact through thick and thin. Her signature: Passionate and Positive about the miracle of life. She confided in many people and I’m sure that each one of us thought we were among her most special friends. Lois loved to compete and she loved people. She was spirited, beautiful and a treasure to all of us who knew her well. We will miss you Lois. Goodbye my friend goodbye. We send heartfelt condolences to Gordon, Linda & family. Special hugs to all. – Stephania & Russell Duffee
Lois was a fabulous human being. A fierce competitor and a loyal friend (unless you didn’t give her a putt 😉
God Bless Lois, I hope that you and Frank are holding hands and rekindling your love story that you cherished for so many years.
Dear Gordon, Linda and Family
Please accept our deepest sympathy. Lois will be remembered for her many accomplishments, especially
in golf, but also for her kindness and concern for others. She will be missed.
To Lois’ family and beloved friends,
Reno and I had come to have a treasured relationship with Lois in her last few years. We loved visiting with her and tipping a glass of Bourbon together. We loved getting her regular phone calls to catch up and chat. We loved that she took us out for a round at the Legends Golf Course and to show us her her Legends honorary picture. She got us into a rare viewing of the golf museum there. It’s incredible! We loved when she called us “beautiful human beings.” That’s exactly what she was – A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING. We feel so blessed to have been graced with her friendship. We will miss you Lois, so very much. What a girl!! So special!!
My heart aches with the loss of such a beautiful, loving, kind, passionate, caring woman. Lois was like a family member in our office. I loved when she came into the office as she knew we would always take good care of her. We shed many tears of gratitude for each other. She was always excited to share her golf articles published in the paper with us too. She was proud and her love of golf was undeniable. She treated Thor and Myself like family. I will cherish my last hug from her! ❤️ I will miss her! ❤️

Dear Gordon, Linda and Family,
A truly great spirit has moved on. Auntie Lois was such an amazing lady. She always made me feel special and what a tribute to see here that she made so many others feel that way too. I will never forget the Christmas dinners our families shared and later Linda too as a child. Your family is so special to me, and I truly appreciate it. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you. She will live in my heart forever. Much Love.
Gordon and Linda and family.
