With deep sadness we announce the passing of Vivian Schinkinger, 92, on March 10, 2025. She was predeceased in 2015 by her husband Kurt after 64 years of marriage as well as her son-in-law Paul Hurl who passed away suddenly in 2023. Vivian leaves behind her daughters, Jill McCagherty (Barry) and Janice Hurl; grandchildren, Megan Hurl, Jaime Lee (Dave), and Joel Newman (Jaclyn); as well as great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Thomas, and Tyson.

Vivian had deep roots in the St. Albert community where she and Kurt settled in 1961 to raise their family. She worked part-time at the St. Albert branch of the Scotia Bank and later in hosiery at Woodward's Westmount, always taking time to be at home for Kurt, the girls and social and volunteer pursuits. Vivian and Kurt were active members of the St. Albert Curling Club from 1961 to the mid 1970's. Vivian also bowled for 30 years in the St. Albert leagues and played in the same ladies bridge club in St. Albert for over 30 years. Her volunteer work included well over 30 years with the St. Albert Hospital Auxiliary and St. Albert United Church Women and many years with the St. Albert Library, Welcome Wagon and Meals on Wheels. After relocating to Spruce Grove after retirement, Vivian continued as a member of the UCW and volunteered at the Spruce Grove Thrift Shop.

Notwithstanding Vivian's many pastimes and commitments, family was her greatest joy. She lived for family gatherings. From a German heritage Vivian was an excellent cook and large meals were her forte. She came from a musical family. With her two sisters, Kay and Norma, the three sang in lovely harmony, while their father, Henry played guitar and their mother, Grace played violin. These gatherings continued long after Vivian's own family came along, and the rooms and dining tables filled with spouses, children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the families grew. And oh! How Vivian loved snuggling with her grandchildren!

Vivian was a character who couldn't be missed in a crowded room! She had an infectious laugh and laughed too loud at an off-colour joke, especially if she made it! A redhead, Vivian was a sun worshipper even though she knew she should stay in the shade. But Vivian, by nature, could NOT remain in the shade! She knew how to make an entrance. If it went unnoticed, she'd leave and enter again! She loved beautiful shoes. And beautiful clothes! She sewed, knit, crocheted, did petit-point and cross-stitch. She made homemade soup from scratch. She took Spanish lessons in her 50's. She had the same hairdresser for 30 years! Vivian was June Cleaver and Zsa Zsa Gabor rolled into one. A lovely and loving, witty, spirited, clothes horse, the fiery redhead had a quick temper, a sharp tongue and a style to match.

After Kurt passed away in 2015 Vivian faltered living alone for six years before finding her home and renewed sense of family at Jubilee Lodge. Once there, she relaxed and recharged in her peaceful, sun-filled room where she spent her days reading, immersing herself in the craft of diamond art, helping at the jigsaw table, enjoying many new friendships and often singing along with the weekly entertainment.

Vivian will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, sharp wit and undeniable presence. She had a way of lighting up a room with laughter, a well-timed joke or simply her stylish entrance. Fiercely loving and full of life, she left an impression that won't soon fade. Her warmth, humour and unwavering sense of self will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Bootzelaar and all of the staff at Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home for your unwavering care and support during the past four years and for the outpouring of love and consideration shown to us during this trying time. Angels truly do walk among us.
