**Violet Rosetta Mootoo, Resident of Edmonton, Alberta, Passed Away Gracefully at 5 AM (MST), Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Magnificent Age of 97. **
She will be lovingly missed by her greatest assets: her children, Sydney, Shirley, Lennox (Lorraine), June (Jeff), and Jacqueline (Brian), along with her cherished grandchildren: Kory, JJ (Medina, Kaleena, Klarissa, Zoltan, Jacelea (Derek), and Santana, and great-grandchildren, Jenaya, Lenaya, and Zayah. She will also be missed by her extended family Cynthia Holder & Noel Headley of Barbados, Hulbert Headley of Toronto, and John Headley of Calgary.
She was predeceased by her husband Sanasi Sunny Mootoo, her beloved sons Anthony Headley and Grantley Mootoo, her grand-daughter Joyann Reece, her mother Claudia Headley, father Easton Headley, sisters Enid Searles & Dorothy Headley, and brothers Sam Headley and Philip Headley.
Violet was born on April 1, 1927, and lived in Barbados until the age of twenty. She then moved to Guyana, South America, to live with her Aunt Eugene. While in Guyana, she worked at the Albion Estate as a housekeeper for Bookers’ (British Company) who were managing the sugar estates at the time. It was there she met Sunny Mootoo, a chauffeur to the sugar estate manager. They courted and married in 1950, and their marriage produced Sydney, Shirley, Grantley, Lennox, June, and Jacqueline.
Violet and her family immigrated to Toronto, Ontario in 1981 and eventually settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Edmonton became her home, where she spent much of her life as a childminder and joined the Park Allen Knitting Group, knitting for the homeless. She was known for her colorful knits using donated wool, creating, and donating many sweaters, her cheerfulness and amazing smile. Her legacy of enormous faith, dedication to her community, and love for her family will forever be revered.
She lived an amazing life full of grace. Even when faced with challenges, she always persevered with vigor and strength, embodying the qualities of a good Christian soldier to the end. Her unwavering faith during challenging times taught us all the importance of maintaining faith “through thick and thin.”
She loved her caregiver, Tabitha Mann, who kept her engaged with humour and clever wit and even introduced her to Blue Jays baseball. Tabitha spent many hours at her hospital bed watching CNN and discussing politics and current events.
Lastly, we are grateful for the exceptional care afforded to her by the staff at South Campus and the Foothills Medical Center. They called her “mamma” which warmed our hearts.
**Proverbs 31:31**
"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
