Douglas Thomas Wenschlag
Doug was born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan and grew up in Watson, Saskatchewan. The fourth & final child of Oscar and Kitty (Catherine McLean) Wenschlag, he had a busy, full, and active childhood spent learning, playing, and growing with siblings, cousins, and friends. He began working at a young age - including helping his father Oscar deliver water to the residents of the town and spending many hours at the Watson Bakery. He bought his first car before he could drive and maintained his love of seeking out great deals and fun-to-drive vehicles his whole life.
Doug had an eclectic career that included time in the military, working in a coal mine, doing promotions for sporting events across Canada and the US, marketing and promotions for the Edmonton Oilers, and as the first General Manager of the Edmonton Drillers soccer team. He then filled many roles for Alberta Report Magazine before transitioning to the printing business. In 1987, Wenard Printing was established. It started in the basement of the family home then moved to a small commercial space and eventually to a larger industrial space. Doug slowly transitioned to a working-from-home semi-retirement and maintained a few loyal customers up until his passing.
Doug enjoyed spending time with his three daughters and his fur-grandbabies, Gracie, Fitz and Greg. His wit was sharp, his humour dark, his heart soft, and his head hard. He was deeply loved and will be very missed.
Doug is survived by three daughters - Catherine (and her mother, Colleen Chapman), Anne and Meg (and their mother, Marta), sister Donna Craig, cousin Gerry, and other, much-loved family members. He was predeceased by his parents and older brothers Melvin and Bruce.
If you wish to honour his memory you can spend some time looking for great car deals online or watching an Oilers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, or Toronto Blue Jays game. If you're feeling really adventurous, find something mechanical you don't understand, take it apart to try and figure it out, then put it back together the way you think is best. Bonus points if it starts beeping.
In lieu of flowers, his daughters would appreciate donations to an organization of your choice that treats and supports people with addictions & mental health challenges or an animal rescue of your choosing.
