Joyce M. Prosper (JP) departed this life on June 28, 2024 in Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. She will be remembered as a devoted and helpful friend who, while being “present” in the times of need of others, she nonetheless insisted that her circumstances would be “no bother” to others. It was one of the contradictions in her life.

Edmonton is well removed from Joyce’s birthplace in Trinidad & Tobago. But in 1968, the joint call of post-secondary educational opportunities and the power of a high-school friendship (with Ms. Letitia Cole), became a challenge which JP relished at the time.  And JP had also experienced some relocation pressure on account of the loss of her dear Godmother “Nen” Riley who had steered her through childhood in St. Margaret’s Village. “Nen” had sustained her up to, and through her secondary education at Naparima Girls High School in San Fernando.

Away from Trinidad & Tobago, JP attended the University of Alberta as of 1969, and also engaged in a wide range of employment opportunities. While she enjoyed employment with the Alberta Provincial Government, it was as a Nurse’s Assistant that JP provided her longest service.  When not with her lifelong migrant friends like Mrs. Ann Brereton, Mrs. Yvette Leslie, Mrs. Joyce Philips, or with newer ones she has developed, JP has been a devout member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she served on the Church’s Board.

Joyce is survived by a brother Joseph Prosper, her many close loved ones – especially nieces and nephews in the Ayi family, the Cole family, the Leslie family, the Elcock family, the Brereton family, Ms. Jean Harriett and also her two god-children, Marlene Joseph – Glasgow and Miriam David - Barrington.  She is preceded in death by her parents (Mr. Anthony Prosper and Mrs. Eva Thelma Prosper), and two brothers, George and Dave.

  1. A true Christian; always quiet and humble. God loved her more than any
of us could. She is in His loving arms now. Rest in peace there, dear Joyce.

  2. Joyce will be missed deeply. She was always pleasant and kind to me at Grandview. She worked night shift. RIP Joyce.

  3. RIP Joyce. As a founder member, you gave unstinting service to the Congress of Black Women of Canada (Edmonton Chapter). Your contribution as a member and 2-term board member, especially in those early days, has helped to build an organization that is still going strong for over forty (40) years.
    We thank you sister.
