  4. Please accept my sincere condolences on behalf of my family and myself regarding Emil’s passing. I first met Emil in 1985 when I joined the Geotechnical Section of the Materials Engineering Branch of Alberta Transportation and Utilities (AT&U). At the time, Emil was an Engineering Technologist. Later, following the downsizing of AT&U, he joined me at GAEA Engineering Ltd in 1996, where he was engaged in a variety of field works, including drilling and sampling, project management of paving and grading projects, and landslide rehabilitation works, amongst others, for AT&U and Public Works, Canada. He was also an essential team member who worked for GAEA in Guyana, South America, on highway project studies. Emil’s dedication and expertise were truly admirable, and he was a very dependable colleague who undertook his work with the utmost care and was very good at providing detailed written reports on the projects he was engaged in. His contributions to our field were significant and will be remembered with pride.

Since I departed from Alberta to reside in Ontario in 2007, Emil and I have kept in contact by phone. At this time of the year, I would hear from him about his garden planting with his kinfolk at their farm in Vermillion. We would also always reflect on the whereabouts of other colleagues known to us from AT&U. who used to get together with him in Edmonton for a yearly lunch or dinner when they were available. Whenever I spoke with Emil, I would find out how each was doing. Emil exuded a kind and humorous personality and made you laugh when in casual conversation. He always had some humor to pass on based on the characteristics of our mutual colleagues.

I share in your grief and loss. Losing a beloved family member is always a devastating event, but it is something we all face or will face as life progresses. While it is said that healing from losing a loved one takes time, unfortunately, no one ever wholly forgets the loss.

Emil, please stop a few times along your journey to the Pearly Gates for a pint, some nachos, and some wings. May you rest in Peace, my friend. Your wit and laughter will be dearly missed.

  5. Sorry to hear of Emil’s passing. We know you are a close knit family and this will be a void at the family gatherings. Cherish the memories you have of him.
