Joan Muriel Wack

It is with great sadness and regret that the family of Joan Wack announces her sudden passing on June 10, 2024 at the age of 89.

Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband John; children Wendy Howard, Wayne Williams (Ruth Hassett); grandchildren Brett, Cole (Emma Houghton) Kate; great grandson Arthur Howard; her brother Larry (Jean) Smith, and her nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her parents Dwight Murray Smith and Isabel Muriel Smith, her sister Carol, her brother Doug, and her first husband LCdr. Arthur Williams.

Joan was born in Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow Nova Scotia on May 22, 1935 and grew up on a farm in Pictou County. She graduated from Acadia University in 1955 and went on to teach at CFB Shearwater where she met her first husband LCdr. Arthur Williams. They were married in August of 1957 and lived in Dartmouth and Cornwall England. Arthur died in a plane crash in October 1966.

In 1968, Joan and her children (Wendy and Wayne) moved to Edmonton, where she embraced a life of service and dedication. She worked as a teaching assistant, accountant, and manager of after-school care programs, touching many lives with her kindness and expertise.

In 1973, Joan married John Wack, and together they embarked on countless adventures, crisscrossing North America in their RV during their retirement years. Joan’s love for meeting new people and exploring new places was matched by her passions as an art collector, music enthusiast, and expert quilter.

Joan’s active lifestyle was an inspiration to all who knew her. She enjoyed golfing, curling, and taking long walks with John, friends, and family, no matter where she was. Her strong desire to serve others and create lasting connections was evident in her interactions with everyone she met. Joan’s commitment to her family, friends, and the children in her care was unwavering, and she remained active on social media to keep in touch with the many people who were dear to her.

Joan’s generosity extended beyond her immediate circle. She volunteered her time to knitting and quilting for children and families in need, and she and John delivered Christmas dinners and presents to those less fortunate.

Most recently, Joan spent her time making new friends since moving into a retirement home, where she continued her volunteer work with the same passion and dedication. Her spirit of giving and her ability to form deep, meaningful connections remained strong.

A memorial service will be held in August to honour Joan’s life, celebrating the legacy of love, kindness, and adventure she leaves behind.
