Gordon Kijek
Gordon Kijek, born in Linz, Austria in 1946, passed away on March 22, 2023, at the age of 76 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Gordon moved to Canada with his family when he was six years old and made Edmonton his home ever since. He had a fulfilling career with the Alberta government for 36 years, retiring as the manager of safety education in 2005. He then continued to work at the University of Alberta as a driving instructor and evaluator, which he enjoyed immensely.
Gordon was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Linda, with whom he shared 54 wonderful years together. He was a proud father to his sons Dean and Sean and cherished his daughters-in-law Kimberly and Amanda as members of his family. Gordon was also a loving brother to his sisters Karin and Dorothea and his Brothers-In Law Richard and Brian. He was a wonderful grandfather to his four grandchildren, Starla, Keira, Griffin, and Everly, who brought great joy to his life.
In his free time, Gordon enjoyed being near or on the ocean, investigating UFOs and crop circles, astronomy, reading a wide variety of books, flying aircraft on his simulator, had a passion for RC planes, and loved to ride motorcycles.
Gordon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His memory will be cherished forever.
The Family requests that in lieu of flowers you consider a donation to either Diabetes or Cancer foundation charities.

So sorry for your loss Dean give my love to the rest of the family
Gord and I first met in 1977, when I joined Alberta Transportation. He soon became my mentor and trusted and faithful friend. I fondly remember the many times I was invited to share a delicious dinner Linda had cooked when I visited Edmonton.
Over the years Gord and I grew closer, and I began to regard him more as a slightly older but wiser brother than a friend. We shared many laughs along the way, even when things got rough at times. It would be difficult to meet a kinder person–he even came to Calgary to help load our moving van when my wife, Deborah, and I moved to Whitehorse. What a delightful surprise!
Gord managed to come to the Yukon for a UFO conference. Staying with us, he sampled bear meat with unexpected results that we laughed about for years to come. We also spent a wonderful day in Alaska together.
Gord loved Linda and his siblings. He was immensely proud of his sons and their spouses, and he absolutely adored his grandchildren.
I must also say that my professional success was firmly based on what Gord taught me. I will sorely miss his advice and his friendly voice. And, from now on, when I listen to Bianca’s songs, I will do so with a smile but also a tear in my eye.
We will meet again, old friend. Until then, rest in peace.
Julius & Deb
Hi Julius, I couldn’t help but notice your kind words regarding Gordon Kijek’s passing. I accidentally stumbled across his obituary; so sad to learn of his passing. I bumped into him quite a few years ago at Capilano mall. We had a nice little visit. He looked great and was enjoying his retirement!
Linda, I am sorry to hear about your beloved husband’s passing. Our deepest condolences to you and your family. May the beautiful memories of Gordon help you through this difficult time.
Linda and family so sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved Gordon. Take all the most special memories and hold them ever closer to your heart.
Sincere condolences
Our sincerest sympathy to the Kijek family.
Gord assisted the U of A with several legislative aspects of transportation safety and as a driver evaluator. He touched the hearts of hundreds of drivers with his caring, thoughtful and methodical approach.
We spent hours talking about Linda, Dean and Sean and their families while watching NASCAR races and he would light up when talking about the grand kids.
Gord was a close and trusted friend and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
My deepest condolences to you Linda and your whole family. I remember you telling me how the two of you met – so romantic. I know you will cherish every memory. Take care.
Deepest sympathies to your family. We always enjoyed our visits with Gordon. He had many passions and could chat about many things. We always enjoyed him talking about flying, air shows and the navy. We will miss him dearly but are grateful to have known him over the years. Regrettably we are unable to attend the service as calving season started yesterday for us. I am sure he would understand. God bless you on your next journey. We will make a donation in Gordon’s memory to a charity of his choice
I am so sorry to hear this news Linda. This is a very difficult time for you and your family. Please accept my deepest condolences.
I’m so sorry to hear of Gord’s passing. I also knew Gord from working in the Traffic Safety Services division at Alberta Transportation. Gord was a gentleman, through and through. Rest in peace friend, you will be missed.
I want to express my condolences to Gord’s family and friends on his passing. I worked with him at Alberta Transportation many years ago. He was a really decent person and had so many interests – I really enjoyed talking with him. I remember he loaned me some of his books on mountain climbing, particularly those who had climbed Everest. I’m sure he will be missed by all who knew him.
My deepest condolences. I worked with Gord when he was with the AB Government and I was with the EPS. Gord was a great guy. He always spoke highly of his family and later enjoyed being with his son on the various military ships. While he was at the AB Government, he was the “go to guy” for any Traffic Safety Act information. I didn’t see much of Gord after his retirement but thought of him often. He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.
