Frederick James Nelson
With much sadness we announce Fred’s passing at age 71 on the 21st of August at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Fred was the beloved husband of Pauline (West) for 46 years, father of Jeff (Patricia) and Stephen (Mandy) and brother of Deborah Nelson. Also mourning his passing are in-laws Connie West, Jacquie (Bruce) Henning, Allan (Bianca) West and Ron Gaudet. Fred was predeceased by his parents Morley and Margaret (Switzer) Nelson, father-in-law Eric West and sister-in-law Linda West.
Fred was Papa to 4 precious grandchildren: Logan, Máire, Rowan and Bridget.
Born 11 July 1951 in Nipawin SK, Fred spent his childhood in many small Saskatchewan towns and in Airdrie AB before his parents moved to Edmonton. Fred became a skilled carpenter, known for his attention to detail and was always willing to help friends with their projects. He was employed at Shell Scotford Refinery for 20 years as a security shift supervisor. Later he worked in Walmart’s photo lab until poor health made an early retirement necessary.
Fred’s family is grateful to Dr. S. Alkurtass for his many years of care. Our thanks also to Dr. M. Taher, Brian from Southwest Homecare, first responders, and the dedicated sarcoma, pulmonary and thoracic surgery teams at CCI and RAH. Your compassionate care during Fred’s final illness and hospitalization will not be forgotten.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a funeral service at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church 8420-145 Street at 11 am on September 10th.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory are gratefully accepted to Heart and Stroke Foundation 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton T6H 5W5 or World Wildlife Fund Canada @wwf.ca
