With heavy hearts, we announce Alfred Ernest Baker passed on Sunday, August 14th to be with the Lord at the age of 89 years.

Al was born on May 19, 1933 in Edmonton, Alberta where he lived and worked his entire life. He was the firstborn child and only son of Ralph and Louisa Baker. His sisters Lilian and Iris joined the Baker family soon after.

Sadly, his birth mother Louisa passed away when he was three years old, and Ralph re-married to Martha Stake in Edmonton and soon after his youngest sister Violet was born, making their immediate family unit complete.

Al was very skilled in building construction and business management, and he co-founded RA Baker Construction in 1955, which built many quality custom homes and commercial businesses in South Edmonton.

They built Time Car Wash in 1961, the first full-service automatic car wash in Strathcona. In November 1966, Al founded Timeco Sales & Service, which he co-owned and -operated with a partner, and later continued with his son until the business sale and his deserved retirement in 2004.

Although very busy with work and church, the Lord provided him with a loving wife, Helen. They first met at Sylvan Lake church camp in 1959 when Al was 27 years old. They married a year later on July 23, 1960. Their first of four children born to the family was a son Brian, followed by three daughters: Brenda, Colleen, and Connie.

Family time was a priority and Al was very proud of and blessed with his close Christian family.

The annual vacations were always special moments together and included out-of-country spots like Hawaii, Disneyland, Disneyworld and Israel. Al remained committed to God and his faith since his youth and was involved in many church outreach ministries, singing, and music.

Baker Construction helped to build the first Pentecostal church in west Edmonton, called Gospel Centre, which the young family attended regularly. As the four children grew up, moved away, and married, seven grandchildren were added to Al and Helen’s family, and even later, three great-grandchildren.

The Lord saw fit to take Al home on August 14th, 2022 after a 10-year journey with Dementia-Alzheimer’s and he passed away peacefully in his care room with loved ones.

Al leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Helen, two sisters, Iris and Violet, son Brian (Lucia), and daughters Brenda (Terry), Colleen (Mark), and Connie (Christopher), his grandchildren: Shannis, Corey, Sharlaine (James), Chad, Sheldon (Amy), Natalie (Caleb), and Nathan (Taylor), three great grandchildren: Ivy, Emery, and James. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Martha, his first mother Louisa, and sister Lilian.

A Visitation will be held Thursday evening, August 18, 2022 from 6 pm – 8 pm at Trinity Funeral Home, 10530 116 Street, Edmonton Alberta.

A Funeral Service celebrating Al’s life will be held Friday, August 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Funeral Home, 10530 – 116 Street, Edmonton, Alberta. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

  2. My heartfelt condolences to all of the Baker family as you remember your husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa and brother. May you share the best of stories as you remember him and lay him to rest. God bless you all.

  3. My condolences to the Baker Family,
especially Helen, Colleen, Connie, Brenda & Brian..
As well as the extended family!
Helen and I have been close friends for 50 years..
I recall Al as such a hard worker, and great provider.

Helen said, he would read the Edmonton Journal every day..
Spread out on the carpet, but their cat loved it too, and would curl up on the places where Al was reading..
But Al never moved the cat from the Newspaper..
he must have enjoyed the cat & just read around it!

I’m sorry to have missed Al’s funeral, but
    Appreciated seeing it on Vimeo..
and seeing the Baker family there!

God sent His Holy Spirit to comfort us as we mourn,
May the Comforter be with you all, now!
    Love, Janet
